I’m working on a short story cycle based off Greek/Hellenistic Mythology (also because… it pairs well with astrology, which I used to be a professional astrologer lololol) but I’d love to see or read your Sappho inspired work! Speaking of, who is your favourite translator of her work?
Anne Carson! Other translators have interesting interpretations, but Carson's is simple and true. Your short story mythology sounds super interesting. Kind of like the metamorphoses?
In a way! Mostly exploring what comes after all the mythology and speculating what some of these dysfunctional dynamics and characters would do after settling into each other. Sort of exploring the humanness and messiness of being alive but veiling that with mythological archetypes and figures.
I love Anne Carson’s translation. I also love Mary Barnard’s translations too. But I find Carson’s to read better in the format and juxtaposed against the original Greek
